GENERAL FRENCH
CONSULATE. My
Dear Maurice,
Firstly let me thank you for that delightful soiree your good lady
put on the other night. life
out here can be so tedious that it is such occasions that brings relief,
the champagne was perfect, 1851,
if I am not mistaken and the hors d‘oeuvres nicely presented although I
found the monkey gonads just a little bland,
but I understand your chef Henri has been poorly of late, damned
climate of course. I am having
my chef send over some black truffles that have just arrived and I am sure
that will put a smile back on his face.
I take it you will have been receiving complaints from your fellow
DE Beaujolais up river as that fellow of ours colonel von stromp at
kaiserville has sent a number this way.
of course it is very hard to judge the rights and wrongs from here
but von stromp does come from very good stock whereas I am told that de
beaujolais fellow is very much one of the Nouveau types.
as such you might like to set him right as I have heard he is new
to these parts and although I am sure he gained much experience in Algeria
it really won‘t hold him in good stead down here.
perhaps some joint action against those damned Lobotomi may be in
order before we have the British breathing down our backs,
you know how holier than thou they can be.
anyway enough of business I was really wondering if you fancy a
game of bridge over at the correspondents club tonight, that fellow
churchill is in town and plays a neat hand I have heard he is fond of
cigars and shall introduce him to those havannas of mine,
a bottle of that fine cognac of yours wouldn‘t come amiss, eh.
by the way not a word of this business to churchill you know how
hungry for scandal these reporters are,
lets just keep it amongst ourselves.
RESPECTFULLY
yours
General APFEL SCHNAPPS
COMMISSIONER GENERAL
